Finding affiliate products to promote is relatively easy, but finding products that actually generate sales is a different challenge. There are thousands of affiliate programs available, and not every product is worth promoting. Some may offer high commissions but struggle to convert visitors into buyers.

I think the key is to focus on products that genuinely solve a problem and match the interests of your target audience. Here are a few things I usually consider when evaluating affiliate products.

Understand Your Target Audience

Before choosing any product, it's important to understand what your audience is looking for.
  • Identify the common problems and challenges your audience faces.
  • Look at the type of products they frequently search for.
  • Choose products that are relevant to your website, blog, or social media niche.
  • Pay attention to questions people ask in online communities and forums.
Promoting something your audience actually needs is usually more effective than randomly choosing products with high commissions.

Check Product Quality and Customer Reviews

A product might look attractive on an affiliate dashboard, but that doesn't necessarily mean customers will be satisfied with it.
  • Read customer reviews on different platforms.
  • Look for repeated complaints about product quality or customer support.
  • Check whether the product delivers what its sales page promises.
  • If possible, try the product yourself before recommending it.
Products with positive customer experiences are generally easier to promote with confidence.

Evaluate the Affiliate Commission

Commission rates matter, but I wouldn't choose a product based on commission percentage alone.
  • Compare commission rates across different affiliate programs.
  • Check whether the program offers recurring or one-time commissions.
  • Understand the payment threshold and payout schedule.
  • Consider the average order value and potential earnings per sale.
A product with a smaller commission but a better conversion rate could generate more income than an expensive product that rarely sells.

Look at the Product's Conversion Potential

This is something worth checking before investing time and money into promotion.
  • Check whether the product has a clear and convincing sales page.
  • Look for useful product demonstrations, testimonials, and comparisons.
  • Make sure the checkout process is simple.
  • Check whether the vendor provides reliable tracking and reporting.
  • If available, review historical conversion data from the affiliate program.
A good product can still struggle to generate sales if its landing page or buying experience is poor.

Research Competitors and Market Demand

I also think competitor research can reveal whether a product has genuine demand.
  • Search Google for product reviews and comparison articles.
  • Check discussions on Reddit and relevant online forums.
  • Look at what other affiliate marketers are recommending.
  • Use keyword research tools to understand search interest.
  • Identify products with consistent demand rather than relying only on temporary trends.
The goal isn't to copy competitors but to understand what customers are interested in and where there might be opportunities.

Test Products Before Scaling Promotion

Instead of promoting several products at once, it can be useful to start with a small selection and measure the results.
  • Create helpful product reviews or comparison content.
  • Test different headlines and calls to action.
  • Track clicks, conversions, and earnings per click.
  • Compare results across different traffic sources.
  • Stop investing heavily in products that consistently underperform.
Testing helps identify which products are worth giving more attention to.
In my opinion, successful affiliate marketing isn't just about finding products with attractive commission rates. It's about understanding customer needs, choosing reliable products, and building trust through honest recommendations.

I'd rather promote a few relevant products that genuinely help my audience than fill a website with dozens of random affiliate links.

How do you usually select affiliate products? Do you prioritize commission rates, product quality, customer demand, or actual conversion data? I'd be interested to hear what has worked for other affiliate marketers.
