Hi all,

I expected that restarting an old PPC campaign with identical settings would continue performing as before. Instead, every relaunch seems to produce different results.

No changes to keywords, ads, audiences, or budget yet the campaign behaves like it's brand new.

What factors could be causing this? Any tips for making campaign restarts more consistent?

I've seen this happen quite a few times. Even if your settings don't change, the auction environment does. Competitors may have adjusted their bids, new advertisers may have entered the market, and user behavior changes over time. Those factors alone can make the same campaign perform very differently.

One thing I always check is the search volume. Even if nothing inside the campaign changed, demand for those keywords might have shifted since the campaign was paused.

I used to think something was wrong with my account until I realized PPC is never a controlled experiment. Every auction is different, and your competitors are constantly making changes behind the scenes.

In my experience, seasonality plays a much bigger role than most people expect. Relaunching the same campaign in a different month can produce completely different results.

I've noticed the same thing with Google Ads. Usually I let the campaign run for at least a week before making any judgments because the first few days can be misleading.

Don't forget about Quality Score. Even if your campaign settings stay the same, expected CTR and auction competition can influence performance over time.

I've had campaigns that performed poorly after restarting but recovered after about ten days. Sometimes patience is all that's needed.

The audience itself may not be the same anymore. People's interests and buying intentions change, even within a few weeks.

One lesson I learned is never to compare today's results with results from several months ago without considering what's changed in the market.

If you're using Smart Bidding, Google may need time to relearn conversion patterns after a long pause. That could explain the inconsistency.

I've experienced this with Meta Ads as well, so I don't think it's limited to Google. Digital advertising platforms are constantly adapting to new signals.

Competition is probably the biggest factor. You don't see what other advertisers are doing, but their actions definitely affect your campaign.

Sometimes I duplicate the campaign instead of simply restarting it. Oddly enough, I've had better results doing that, although it's not guaranteed.

Check whether your conversion tracking is behaving exactly the same as before. Even small tracking issues can make performance appear much worse than it actually is.

I've stopped expecting identical results from PPC campaigns. Too many external variables change every day for that to happen consistently.

If the pause lasted several weeks or months, I'd almost treat the relaunch as a completely new campaign and monitor it accordingly.

User intent changes faster than many advertisers realize. The same keyword can convert differently depending on what's happening in the market.

I've found that making no changes for the first several days after restarting helps. Constant adjustments during that period often make things even worse.
