I keep seeing people talk about affiliate marketing as a way to make money online, but I’m still not completely sure how the whole process works.

Can someone who has actually done affiliate marketing explain it in simple terms, step by step?

For example, how do you choose products, find affiliate programs, get people to your links, and eventually earn commissions?

I’d especially appreciate advice from beginners who started with little or no experience. What should someone focus on first, and what mistakes should they avoid?

Affiliate marketing is basically recommending someone else’s product and earning a commission when your referral makes a purchase. You normally get a unique tracking link from the affiliate program. The important part is getting the right people to see that link.

In simple terms, you are helping a company find customers. They give you a tracking link, and you earn a commission when a referral completes the required action.

Reviews and comparison content were the easiest formats for me to understand. Someone is already researching a purchase, so your job is to provide useful information and help them understand the differences between the options.

If you are starting with no money, I’d focus on organic traffic first. Learn SEO or content creation instead of immediately spending a lot on paid advertising.

Budget allocation is where I think actual business data becomes extremely important.

A campaign generating 100 leads isn't necessarily better than one generating 30 if those 30 leads are much more valuable. I try to look at the full customer journey before deciding where additional budget should go.

That approach has prevented me from scaling campaigns just because their dashboard numbers looked good.
