When I started affiliate marketing I ignored email for about a year. Big mistake. The moment I started building a list, everything changed. Here's my honest experience going from 0 to 800 subscribers:

What I used as a lead magnet:
I made a simple PDF called '17 Free Tools Every Freelancer Should Be Using.' Took me one evening to make in Canva. It's not a masterpiece it's a list with short descriptions and links. But it's genuinely useful and it solves a specific problem my audience has.

Where I put the opt-in form:
At the end of every blog post
As a pop-up that shows after 60 seconds (I know people hate pop-ups but mine converts at 4.2%)
In my YouTube video descriptions
In my Quora bio

What I send my list:
Once a week I send a short email usually 200-300 words max. I share one useful tip, tool, or resource. If there's an affiliate link it's because the tool I'm recommending is genuinely relevant. I never send 'buy this' emails. I send 'here's something useful' emails that happen to have affiliate links.

The results:
My email list generates about $180-250 per month in affiliate commissions. For 800 subscribers that's a pretty solid revenue per subscriber. More importantly, these are people who've specifically asked to hear from me the conversion rates from email are 5-10x higher than from random blog traffic.

An 800-person list generating that much is impressive.
It really is. Many people assume you need tens of thousands of subscribers, but a smaller, engaged list can produce surprisingly good results.
Value-first emails always seem to perform better.
I’ve noticed the same. When emails focus on helping people first, readers naturally become more interested in recommendations later.
I like that your lead magnet solves a specific problem.
That's what stood out to me too. A focused lead magnet usually attracts subscribers who are genuinely interested, which improves engagement later on.
Weekly emails sound much more manageable than daily ones.
Weekly emails feel much more realistic for most people. It's easier to maintain quality without feeling pressured to send something every day.
This motivates me to finally create my first lead magnet.
Go for it. Your first lead magnet doesn't need to be perfect. You can always improve it based on feedback once people start downloading it.
Email marketing definitely deserves more attention.
Definitely. Building an email list gives you a direct way to reach your audience without depending entirely on search engines or social media algorithms.
