When I started affiliate marketing I ignored email for about a year. Big mistake. The moment I started building a list, everything changed. Here's my honest experience going from 0 to 800 subscribers:
What I used as a lead magnet:
I made a simple PDF called '17 Free Tools Every Freelancer Should Be Using.' Took me one evening to make in Canva. It's not a masterpiece it's a list with short descriptions and links. But it's genuinely useful and it solves a specific problem my audience has.
Where I put the opt-in form:
At the end of every blog post
As a pop-up that shows after 60 seconds (I know people hate pop-ups but mine converts at 4.2%)
In my YouTube video descriptions
In my Quora bio
What I send my list:
Once a week I send a short email usually 200-300 words max. I share one useful tip, tool, or resource. If there's an affiliate link it's because the tool I'm recommending is genuinely relevant. I never send 'buy this' emails. I send 'here's something useful' emails that happen to have affiliate links.
The results:
My email list generates about $180-250 per month in affiliate commissions. For 800 subscribers that's a pretty solid revenue per subscriber. More importantly, these are people who've specifically asked to hear from me the conversion rates from email are 5-10x higher than from random blog traffic.
