Hey everyone! 👋

When I first started getting into websites, I honestly thought choosing a domain was pretty simple just find a name you like, check if it’s available, and register it. 😄

But once you start building websites, you realize that choosing the right domain can actually make a difference, especially if you're planning to turn the site into a long-term project or brand.

Here are a few things I’ve learned that might help anyone who is just getting started.

1. Keep Your Domain Simple & Memorable

The first thing I look for is simplicity. A domain should be easy to remember, spell, and type. Try not to make it complicated with unnecessary numbers, strange spellings, or too many hyphens.

Think about telling someone your domain over a phone call. If they can easily remember and type it later, that's a good sign.

2. Think About Branding & Future Growth

Don't choose a domain only because it matches your current topic perfectly. Your website might grow or change direction in the future.

A short, brandable name can give you more flexibility than a domain that is extremely specific to one keyword or product.

Keywords in a domain aren't necessarily bad, but I wouldn't force them in just because you think they'll automatically improve SEO. Choose something that sounds natural and that you can see yourself using for years.

3. Check the Domain History Before Buying

If you're thinking about buying an expired or previously used domain, definitely do a little research first.

An old domain isn't automatically a good domain. Check what the website was previously used for and take a look at its backlink profile. A domain with lots of backlinks can still have a bad history if those links are spammy or completely unrelated.

Sometimes, starting fresh with a clean domain is much better than buying an old domain with problems.

4. Don't Overthink It — Start Building

This is probably the biggest thing I'd tell beginners.

It's easy to spend days or even weeks looking for the "perfect" domain. At some point, you just need to choose a good one and start working on the actual website.

A domain is only the starting point. The content you create, the value you provide, the experience you give visitors, and the trust you build are what really matter in the long run.

For me, a good domain should be simple, memorable, relevant, and flexible enough to grow with the project.

What about you guys? When choosing a domain, do you usually go for a short brandable name, a keyword-based domain, or an aged/expired domain?

I completely agree about not overthinking the domain. I used to spend way too much time searching for the perfect name, but eventually realized that building the site matters much more.

The point about checking domain history is really important. An aged domain can look attractive at first, but a bad backlink profile or previous spam use can create more problems than benefits.

I personally prefer short, brandable domains. They give you much more freedom if your website expands into different topics later.
