Hi everyone,

I'm planning to hire a freelancer for an upcoming project, but there are so many options that it's hard to know who to trust. Besides reviews and ratings, what do you usually look at before making a decision?

I'd love to hear what has worked well for you and what mistakes I should avoid.

The first thing I look at is their portfolio. Reviews are helpful, but I want to see real examples of work they've completed. If their previous projects match what I need, that's usually a good sign. I also ask a few questions about their process to see how well they understand the project before hiring.

I always start with a small paid test project. Even experienced freelancers can have different working styles, and a small task lets me see their communication, quality, and ability to meet deadlines without taking a big risk.

For me, communication is more important than price. A freelancer who responds clearly, asks good questions, and keeps me updated throughout the project is worth paying a little extra. Poor communication has caused me more problems than poor technical skills.

I pay attention to how they describe their previous work. If they can explain what challenges they solved and how they approached a project, it usually means they have genuine experience rather than just a nice-looking portfolio.

One mistake I made was hiring someone based only on the lowest price. The quality wasn't what I expected, and I ended up paying someone else to redo the work. Since then, I focus on value instead of finding the cheapest option.

I like to check how long they've been freelancing. Someone with several years of consistent work usually understands deadlines, client expectations, and how to handle unexpected issues much better than someone who is just starting out.

I always ask if they've completed similar projects before. Experience in the same niche saves a lot of time because they already understand the common challenges and don't need as much guidance.

you should look after their experience first

One thing I always notice is how quickly they reply. If someone takes days to answer before getting hired, I assume communication won't improve once the project starts. Fast and professional responses give me more confidence.

I prefer freelancers who ask questions before giving a quote. It tells me they're trying to understand the project instead of simply accepting every job that comes their way.

I also read negative reviews instead of only the positive ones. Sometimes the complaints reveal patterns like missed deadlines or poor communication, which helps me decide whether those issues would affect my project.

A professional portfolio is important, but I also look for consistency. If every project looks polished and well-executed, it shows they maintain quality instead of producing one or two impressive samples.

I usually schedule a short call before hiring. Talking for even ten minutes helps me understand whether they're confident, organized, and genuinely interested in the project.

I like freelancers who are honest about what they can and can't do. If someone promises they can handle absolutely everything, I become a little skeptical. Honest expectations usually lead to better results.

One lesson I learned is never to rush the hiring process. Spending an extra day comparing freelancers is much better than spending weeks fixing mistakes after choosing the wrong person.

I always check if they've worked with repeat clients. Returning customers are usually a strong sign that the freelancer delivers quality work and builds good relationships.

For me, reliability matters just as much as skill. A slightly less experienced freelancer who always delivers on time is often a better choice than an expert who constantly misses deadlines.

I usually ask for references or links to live projects whenever possible. Seeing their work being used by real businesses gives me much more confidence than screenshots alone.
